Magalie is also an investor, community activist and diaspora strategist. She is the Co-Founder of the Haiti Renewal Alliance (HRA), a non-profit based in the DMV area committed to promoting business development, entrepreneurship, foreign and diaspora direct investment for the socioeconomic development of Haiti. Magalie’s philosophy is promotion of trade over aid for the eradication of poverty and Building Sustainable Institutions by leveraging diaspora human and financial resources. Through her leadership, HRA has developed partnerships with the IOM, UN Foundation, Embassy of Haiti, CFI, American Chamber of Commerce, Haitian public and private sector, as well as, various multilateral institutions including USAID, WB, IDB, to support Haiti’s development initiatives. HRA was the only Caribbean Diaspora participant and signatory at the UNs World Humanitarian Summit in Turkey. Dr. Emile-Backer has presented her diaspora framework model for integrating diaspora in humanitarian affairs across various forums in the US and internationally at at the IOM’s Caribbean Migration Consultation on Proactive Engagement of Diaspora for Development in Grenada; and at the Global Shelter Cluster meeting in Geneva. Her vision is to position HRA to be a leading institution building the case for diaspora partnership and integration in development and humanitarian frameworks. Dr. Emile-Backer holds a doctorate from Howard University, Bachelors from Temple University and postdoctoral fellowship training from Rutgers University among other clinical research training/certifications and publications.
